National Football League: Ask Metallica to be the musical act for the halftime of Super Bowl 50
For over 30 years Metallica has broken down walls and led from the front in the heavy metal/hard rock genre. They are the undisputed kings of heavy metal and responsible for bringing the art form into the homes of millions around the world. Nobody sought them out, they forced their way in and contin
Metallica was the first band to play Antarctica, and now they’re (almost) the first metal band to play the Super Bowl.
As Metallica teases new music from its next album, here is some news from the metal icons we can bank on. Metallica will be involved in the 2016 pre-Super Bowl festivities, playing San Francisco’s AT&T Park on Feb. 6, the night before the big game. The headlining concert comes via CBS Radio’s The Night Before, an annual Saturday-before-Super Sunday event. NFL Butt Fumbles Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show: What About Metallica or Even Green Day?

Why, you ask? Nothing against Coldplay, really. The British band plays a fine brand of catchy, safe melodic alternative rock music. This was it! This was the year for Metallica to headline the Super Bowl halftime show. Instead, James Hetfield and the boys have been relegated to a show called “The Night Before” taking place Feb. 6 at San Francisco’s AT&T Park, a baseball stadium an hour away from Levi’s Stadium, where the Super Bowl will take place the next day. Sure, it’s better than nothing, but why not give Metallica the main stage in the place they call home? Imagine a four-song set consisting of “Master of Puppets,” “Seek & Destroy,” “Fade to Black” and “Enter Sandman”?
Wait, you say! The NFL would never go for metal no matter where the Super Bowl is taking place. Well, how about Bay Area punk rock heroes Green Day? Surely, they would have even been a better choice than Coldplay. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is one of rock’s great showmen, and the band has hit after hit to choose from for their set.
The NFL has been playing it safe for several years since Janet Jackson flashed her nipple during the Super Bowl halftime show in 2004, but it’s time to man up and give fans a show that hits as hard as the players on the gridiron.
